Credit Basics

A credit file is a history of how you have borrowed and billed — not a moral score. Lenders read Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Klarai explains habits. It does not sell loans or “boost” products.

What actually moves a file

  • Paying bills and any credit on time
  • Keeping card balances well below the limit
  • Not opening several accounts in a short window
  • Being on the electoral roll at your current address

What does not

Checking your own score is a soft search. It does not hurt the file. Hard searches (new credit applications) can.

If you are new to credit

Thin files are normal at 18–21. A correctly paid phone contract or being an authorised user is not magic, and a store card is not required. This is not advice — compare options with a regulated adviser if you need one.
